Early in my IT career when I was working for the first ISP in Singapore (Singtel is not the 1st!), I worked in an environment where the work is highly specialised. Now I have to do everything myself which is liberating because I am not at the mercy of a sys admin for me to do my job.
Later on, I worked under a German CIO (while still in Singapore) Dr. Georg Schneider, who advocates the use of open source. Even now, I don't care much for windows servers or solutions.
Sys admin does not only mean servers or VMs. These days it could mean containers as well. I test my projects on my desktop first before launching it on production or staging servers.
