Ubuntu is a great linux distribution based on Debian for beginners. I like it because it comes in both server and desktop versions. It is popular and thus you tend to get a lot of online support.
Most of the examples shown here are for Ubuntu 10.10 (October 2010) - the Maverick Meerkat or jaunty desktop versions but it might apply to other versions too.
